1 Joseph Heller, a popular American writer, was born on May 1, 1923. He was largely a novelist, but he also wrote short stories, plays, and autobiographies. Heller began life as the son of poor immigrants, but his writing skills made him into one of the best post-World War II satirists. His 1961 novel, Catch-22, became world renowned.
