The King James Bible
By Sharon Fabian

1     Many great works of literature were created during the Renaissance. Poets wrote sonnets. Playwrights wrote comedies and dramas. The one piece of Renaissance literature that has probably influenced more people than any other, however, is the King James Bible.

2     The King James Bible was not a new piece of literature. It was a new translation of the Christian Bible that had been around for centuries. The Christian Bible had already gone through many translations in several languages.

3     The original books of the Bible were written in Greek and Hebrew. By the Middle Ages, Latin had become the language of educated people, and only Latin versions of the Bible were used by the church. By the time of the Renaissance, many different Latin translations had been made. Each time it was translated, the Bible strayed a little further from the original. Some people, especially the Puritan reformers, thought that it was time for one good translation of the Bible that everyone could use. They said that the Latin Bibles were not true translations of the original books. They wanted a translation of the Bible that was correct, and they also wanted a translation that was easy for everyone to read, not just Latin scholars.
