Halloween Costume under the Sea
By Mary Lynn Bushong

"There, that should be the last of the supplies for this week," Tim said as he put a box on the pallet and checked off the item on his hand-held computer.

"Did we get the supplies for the party this weekend?" asked Lori.

"Yes, everything is here," Tim said.

Tim and Lori lived in a unique underwater colony called the PHC or Permanent Human Colony. They had lived and gone to school here for several seasons and had learned to adjust to ocean-floor living. They were even learning to help out with the duties that the colony offered, like helping to inventory and store supplies that came in from the land base.

"Lori, have you decided what costume you are going to wear this year for the party?" Tim asked.

Lori continued stocking supplies on the shelves but turned briefly to glance at Tim. "No, I just can't think of anything. I heard that in the old days people used to dress up for Halloween in scary costumes like witches and zombies, but I didn't really want to do that. How about you; what is your costume going to be?"

"I started on my costume a couple of weeks ago. It is going to be a shark," Tim said with a smile as he opened the box on the pallet.

"Oh, that's a good idea," said Lori. "I sure wish I could think of something good. I am running out of time."

"Well, maybe you could go as some other kind of ocean creature -- maybe a mermaid," Tim said. He reached into the box to pull out some cans to stack on the shelf.
