Shutta Crum, Storyteller
By Brandi Waters

1     Telling stories is in Shutta Crum's blood. It has always been a big part of her life. It is no wonder that she became an author.

2     Shutta Crum was born in Kentucky. She got her odd name from her father. His nickname was "Shuddy." Shutta's family lived in a small town in the mountains. There, telling stories was a way of life. Everyone had a story to tell. The best stories were the ones that stretched the truth just a little bit. Some people call those stories tall tales. Other people just call them whoppers! Shutta Crum spent many nights as a young girl listening to these stories. She always listened to them while clutching her father's legs. The stories were a bit scary. Holding onto her dad made her feel safe.

3     Most of the stories that Shutta heard were told from memory. Her family didn't have many books. It wasn't that they didn't like them. The books that they had were very special to them. Books were just harder to find because they lived in a small town.
