Davy Crockett - Born in the Frontier
By Jane Runyon

1     According to legend, Davy Crockett killed a bear when he was just three years old. That was the story told by settlers in the frontier area of Tennessee. Is it true? Probably not. But the life of young Davy Crockett was hard. Killing a bear might have been an easy part of it.
2     David Crockett's ancestors began the search for the perfect place to settle. David's grandfather set sail from Ireland with his wife and children. They were looking for a better life. Their son, John, was born just before the ship set sail. The family landed in the New World and stayed in the Philadelphia area for a couple of years. The promise of free land drew the family to travel across the Allegheny Mountains. Most of the traveling was done by foot. One horse carried all of the family belongings. They set up their own small shelters and grew or trapped their own food.
3     When John Crockett was old enough, his father hired him out as a hired boy to a farmer in Pennsylvania. While working for this family, John's entire family was killed by a group of renegade Indians. He remained in Pennsylvania until he reached manhood. He married and served in the Revolutionary War. But John was drawn to the same life his own father had pursued. He packed up his wife and children and set off to find the land he dreamed of. He wanted a home and farmland where he could find the peace that he could not find around other people.
