1 Would you like to visit a place that looks out of this world? Craters of the Moon might be just what you're looking for. It is so moon-like that Apollo astronauts trained there in 1969 to prepare for exploring the moon. The National Park Service calls it a "weird and scenic landscape." It was formed by volcanic eruptions between 15,000 and 2,100 years ago. The area of this national park and monument is the size of the state of Rhode Island! While you're there, you can look for bombs. These strangely-shaped rocks were once hot blobs of lava shot from volcanoes. The lava bombs have different shapes, called spindles, ribbons, and bread crust. They can be up to thirteen feet long and three feet across.
