First Nation's Crisis

1     Life for native Canadians was never easy. When white men came to North America, some things changed. Some were good changes; other changes made things harder.
 
2     One of the good changes was the horse. Horses made hunting bison easier. They could move people faster and help carry or pull loads.
 
3     The people also learned about guns, trading skins, warm wool blankets, and iron cooking utensils. These things made their lives easier.
 
4     Disease brought suffering and death. Some white traders gave whiskey to the native people. This ruined lives, families, and whole tribes. Then in the 1880's, so many bison had been killed by white hunters that there were few left to feed the native people. Bison also provided clothes and shelter.
