Making Canada
By Mary Lynn Bushong

Canada was not always Canada. It has changed. Once it was owned by the French. They trapped furs. They built homes and towns. They made farms.

Then there was a war. The English won. The French people stayed. Many English moved in. They loved Canada.

The people in the U.S. liked Canada, too. They wanted it to be part of their country. The people of Canada did not like that. They wanted to stop the States.

The people of Canada talked. They could join up. They could make one big land.

They talked to the Maritimes. They talked about what they could do. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick joined Canada. Prince Edward Island was not ready.

The people on the west coast were alone. They did not want to join the U.S. They made a deal. By joining Canada, a railroad would come.

People in Ontario moved west. They went to Red River.

Some French people lived there. They did not like so many people coming. It was harder to hunt. It was harder to trap.
