Protein Food Group
By Meg Leonard |
|
1 Foods in the protein food group help your body in many ways. Foods in this group include meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, soy, nuts, and seeds. It is important to eat many different types of food from this group and to eat foods that are labeled "lean" or "low-fat." Boys and girls between the ages of nine and thirteen should eat five ounces of protein foods each day. This amount can be different for each person, however. If you are very active, you may be able to eat more servings from this group. If you are not very active, then you may need to eat fewer servings. Examples of one ounce of food from this group include one ounce of meat, poultry, or fish, one-fourth cup of cooked beans, one egg, one tablespoon of peanut butter, or a half-ounce of nuts or seeds.![]() |
