Empty Calories on My Plate
By Colleen Messina

1     The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a new way to help people make good choices about what they eat. It is a diagram called My Plate that is a visual representation of healthy food portions. You do not want food on your plate that contains a lot of "empty calories."

2     Calories supply your body with energy. Empty calories come from added sugars and/or solid fats. They have little or no nutrients. A few empty calories are acceptable. Good food choices can reduce the amount of empty calories people eat. Let's be food detectives and find where they are hiding!

3     What about a cherry pastry? Do you think some empty calories might be hiding there? Pastries, cakes, cookies, and donuts are tasty, but they contain solid fat and added sugars. These ingredients add empty calories.
