1 Rocks are made of minerals. Industries use rocks and minerals to make many products. Many minerals have to be mined, or dug from under the ground. Mines can be open pits or small openings or tunnels drilled into rock. Coal is often mined in open pits. A huge hole is dug into the ground. The coal is taken out. The hole is filled in with dirt.
