Dental Hygienist
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Do you like helping people? Do you enjoy working with your hands as well as your mind? Are you interested in helping to prevent disease? Would you like to help people maintain their health? If so, a career as a dental hygienist may be for you.

2     A dental hygienist is an important person in the dental office. It is the job of the dental hygienist to teach people about ways to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy. In most dental offices, the hygienist also cleans teeth and helps the dentist find problems like cavities, gum diseases, and broken or loose teeth. The hygienist also may be the person who takes the X-rays.

3     Dental hygienists must have good fine motor skills. They work with small tools. These tools are made just for dental work. Dental hygienists learn how to use the tools in special classes. The classes may be in a dental school, a community college, or a university. It takes at least two years of study to become a dental hygienist.
