Trading Day: Will Learns About Trade-Offs
By Joyce Furstenau

1     Will enjoyed playing marbles at school. He wanted to win a glass aggie to add to his collection at recess, but he found out it was against the rules to play keepsies. He didn't have money to spend on marbles. He knew some kids who wanted to trade their aggie for a steely. Will wondered how he could get an aggie for his collection without getting into trouble.

2     Will decided to ask his teacher if the class could have a "Trading Day" at school. He thought it would be a good a way for kids to get some of the things they wanted without having to spend money to buy them. There were several other students in class who had marbles, trading cards, and things they would be willing to trade for something they wanted more.

3     His teacher was hesitant at first. She told Will she would have to ask the principal. The principal said he would ask the school's parent group the following week. The parents liked the idea. They thought it would be a great opportunity for kids to learn about the value of things. A trading day would be a good teaching tool for kids to learn about bartering and trade-offs.
