The Apple Tree
By Mary Lynn Bushong

I am a tree. Not just any tree. I am an apple tree.

In the winter, I sleep. I do not feel the cold.

The farmer comes while I sleep. He trims my branches. He does not want me to grow tall. The farmer wants me to grow strong.

He wants me to grow wide. It will make picking apples easy.

The cold is good. I have a deep sleep. I do not feel storms. The snow is a blanket for me.

Soon spring comes. The snow melts away. I begin to wake. The sap begins to run. It moves from my roots to my branches.

The buds begin to swell. Soon they open into leaves and flowers.

My flowers are white. They each have five petals. There are so many, they cover me like snow.

The bees like my flowers. They use them to make apple blossom honey. It is very sweet. The flowers do not last long. Soon the petals fall like snow flakes. The farmer's kids like to play under my branches. They get petals in their hair.
