The Pumpkin Race
By Mary Lynn Bushong

"How is it growing, Dad?" asked Samantha as she walked out to the garden.

"It's coming right along," said Dad proudly. "You haven't been out here in a while. Come and take a look."

Sam stared at her dad's pumpkin. It was huge.

"Wow," she gasped. "That is the biggest pumpkin I have ever seen. It's bigger than me! Did you grow that from a seed package from the store?"

     Dad shook his head.

"Nope, this beauty was from some special order seeds. They were seeds from other Atlantic Giant pumpkins. They are bred to grow really big.

"Why do you have it on that wooden pallet?" asked Sam.

"Well, it keeps the pumpkin off of the ground. It also makes it easier to move it come weigh in time," said Dad.

"Do you think it will win?" asked Sam.

Dad shook his head. "But maybe we'll get one of the other prizes. Besides, I thought it would be more fun to enter the pumpkin race."

"Race? How can you race pumpkins?" asked Sam.

"Well, you hollow out the pumpkin, put it in water, and start paddling."
