Ulysses S. Grant as President
By Cathy Pearl

1     Grant was a great general during the Civil War. He led the Union Army to a victory over the South. Many thought that he would also make an excellent president.

2     Grant was elected president in 1868. By the day of the election, most Southern states were part of the Union again. African Americans were allowed to vote in the election. Most of them voted for Grant. He easily won the election.

3     He didn't have a lot of experience with being a politician. Grant didn't have a lot of information on what kind of job being president was. He did not ask strong leaders to help him. Instead, he filled open jobs in the government with friends.

4     He was an honest man, but that wasn't always the way that he acted when he was sworn into the office. He was given large presents from people who liked him. There were also many scandals.

5     Three million dollars was stolen from the federal government when he was president. Grant did not have a strong reaction to what had happened. Even after the guilty men were found, he still did not react.
