The First Thanksgiving
By Cindy Grigg

1     Caption: The first Thanksgiving, painting by Jean Louis Gerome Ferris (1863-1930)

2     With the help of Indian friends Squanto and Samoset, the Pilgrims were able to grow an abundance of food their first summer in Plymouth Colony. In the fall, they had a good harvest. Seven houses were finished. More were being built. The sickness was over. They no longer were afraid of the Indians. The Indians were their friends.

3     They decided to have a harvest feast to celebrate. If they were careful, no one would go hungry this winter. They invited their Indian friends who had helped them. The Indians wanted to provide food, too. Chief Massasoit sent his best hunters into the woods, and they returned with five deer for the feast.
