Jake and Jackie Prepare for the Holidays
By Beth Beutler

"I really want to make this holiday season special," Jackie told Jake as they pulled on their coats on their way out of school.

"I can't believe it's almost time for Thanksgiving," Jake responded. "Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa will be here before we know it."

Jackie smiled. Jake was good at remembering many different winter holidays because he had friends who celebrated Christmas, friends who enjoyed Hanukkah, and others who gathered together for Kwanzaa. Jackie always admired that about him.

"I've been saving some of my allowance each month toward the holiday season. I want to give people some nice gifts," Jackie said.

Jake smiled. Jackie was always good at creating a celebration, and she was also good at planning ahead. He didn't have much money left. He didn't know what he would do about holiday gifts. He sighed.

     "What's the matter?" Jackie asked.

"Oh, I didn't plan ahead very well. I don't think I'll have much money for gifts."

"Well, Jake, it's not just about buying gifts. Maybe you could make something or give a gift certificate to offer some type of service to someone, like raking their lawn or something."

"That is an idea. How do you decide who to give gifts to?"
