Jordan - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Jordan is not a very big country. It has lots of interesting places, though. Most of Jordan's land is desert. Deserts are places where the weather is very dry and hot. Usually, there aren't many plants in deserts. Deserts are usually very sandy places. Almost three-fourths of Jordan's land is deserts. Most of these deserts are in central and east Jordan. The most famous desert in Jordan is called the Rum Desert. There you would find the beautiful Wadi Rum landscape. This landscape is filled with sandstone mountains.

2     The land in very western Jordan isn't desert. That's because there is a river along Jordan's western border. The Jordan River is very old. You can read about the Jordan River in many old books. In fact, the Jordan River is mentioned several times in the Christian Bible. Unlike the deserts in east Jordan, the land around the Jordan River has many plants. The Jordan River flows south into a place with a strange name.

3     This place is a sea. The sea is at the lowest point on the earth. The sea is surrounded by land. Water from the sea has no place to flow, so it evaporates. What is evaporation? When water on the ground gets warm, the water breaks up into tiny particles. These tiny particles are so small, you can't see them. These particles are very light, so they rise into the air.
