John Grisham - Author
By Tammy Scarbrough

1     John Grisham, the internationally known author of legal thrillers, was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on February 8, 1955. His mother was a stay-at-home mom, and his father was a construction worker. His dream as a child was not to become an author, but to become a professional baseball player.

2     After realizing that he did not play well enough to hit the big leagues, he went on to college and then to law school where he graduated in 1981. He practiced law for almost ten years in Southaven, Mississippi, as a criminal defense and personal injury lawyer. He made the decision to enter politics and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1983 where he served until 1990.

3     In 1987, John Grisham finished writing his first novel A Time to Kill. He would get up at 5 o'clock in the morning every day to write this novel before going off to work. Book publishers were not very friendly toward the book and only promised to publish 5,000 copies. Had Grisham not started his second book The Firm, that may have been an end to his writing career. The Firm was made into a movie and John Grisham became a household name. The book became the best-selling novel in 1991.
