Hungary - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Hungary is a country in Eastern Europe filled with a unique culture. The culture of Hungary is very different from its neighbors. That's because the very first Hungarians came from a long way away.

2     About 1,500 years ago, a group of people called Magyars came to Hungary from central Asia. These nomads brought with them song, dance and other parts of their native culture. The culture they brought with them was unlike the culture of Europe at the time. And parts of today's culture in Hungary are more like the culture of central Asia than Europe, because of the Magyars.

3     Hungarian folk music has its roots in the ancient Magyars. Played with simple instruments like drums, violins, and flutes, ancient Hungarian folk music is similar to central Asian folk music. The people of Turkey, who ruled Hungary for hundreds of years, also influenced Hungarian folk music. Today, Hungarian folk music has been modernized with new song styles and new instruments.
