Ecuador - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Have you ever heard of the equator? Do you have an idea what it is? The equator is a place on earth. But it isn't a single place. The equator stretches all the way around the earth. It is an imaginary line that goes east and west. It goes around the middle of the earth.

2     The equator is halfway between the north and south poles. Usually, countries on or near the equator are pretty hot. There is a country named after the equator. This country is called Ecuador.

3     Ecuador is located in South America. Its capital city is Quito. To Ecuador's west is the Pacific Ocean. To Ecuador's north is Colombia. To Ecuador's south is Peru. Ecuador isn't a very big country. It is one of the smallest in South America. But Ecuador isn't limited to mainland South America. Some of Ecuador is far away. The Galapagos Islands, about 1,000 km away in the Pacific Ocean, belong to Ecuador. And the Galapagos are incredible. In fact, there is a giant turtle named after the Galapagos.
