Netherlands - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     The Netherlands is a country in northern Europe. It is also called Holland. It lies along the northern coast of Europe. Its beaches, many rivers, canals and beautiful cities make it a very wonderful place. Another interesting part of the Netherlands' geography is that it is so flat--and low.

2     The Netherlands is a very flat country. Its tallest point is just 321 meters above sea level. What is sea level? It is a standard tool used to measure land height. Mountains all over the world are measured from sea level. When you hear how tall a mountain is, it's usually how far the top of the mountain is from sea level. Now try to imagine this: much of the Netherlands is actually below sea level. In fact, some land in the Netherlands used to be under the sea!

3     So if the land is below sea level, how do the Dutch (people from the Netherlands) keep the sea from rushing in? Sea walls and dikes, which are walls built to keep water out, protect these areas. There are many of these sea walls and dikes all over the Netherlands.
