The Bahamas - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Do you know what an archipelago is? Archipelago is a big word that means "a group of islands." There's a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea called the Bahamas. The Bahamas are more than 100 islands with a great history. Their location has made the Bahamas an important part of world history. Explorers, royals, treasure hunters, and even pirates have been at home in the Bahamas!

2     The Bahamas lie just off Florida's southeast coast. Many hundreds of years ago, there were many European explorers there. Many people sailed from Europe to North America to find land and treasure. One of the first European explorers to reach North America landed in the Bahamas. You may know of him: his name is Christopher Columbus.

3     There were many shipwrecks around the Bahamas. Many ships full of treasure sunk around the Bahamas. This lost treasure attracted many pirates. For many years, there was even a pirate city in the Bahamas. Today, on the island of Nassau, there is a pirate museum.
