¹     There are many different countries in the world. Each country has its own way of life, culture, and people. Some countries are similar. Many are very different. Some countries that are very far apart are similar. The Netherlands in Europe and Guyana in South America are very far apart. But they have one thing in common. Both countries have had to control the ocean.
 
²     Have you ever been to the beach? What was it like? Were there lots of sand, sea shells, and crashing waves? Guyana is on South America's north shore. It lies along the Caribbean Sea. But Guyana has a coastline very different from other beaches. Much of Guyana's coastline doesn't have any sandy beaches. In fact, a lot of it is a muddy, swampy mess.
 
³     At least that's how it was when explorers from the Netherlands arrived in the 17th century. People from the Netherlands (called Dutch) found lots of swamps and muddy marshes along Guyana's coast. This made it difficult to bring ships to Guyana's coast. Also, a lot of Guyana's northern land was too wet to farm.
