Lebanon - Geography

¹     Lebanon is a special country. It is in the Middle East. To its east lies Syria. To its south lies Israel. To its west lies the Mediterranean Sea. The Middle East can be a very hot and dry place. Parts of Lebanon are no different. But Lebanon is considered a special country in the Middle East for good reasons. Lebanon has a culture that isn't like its neighbors. Its geography, too, is something unique.

²     Lebanon is a very old country. People have been living in Lebanon for thousands of years. In fact, Lebanon's first people arrived there 12,000 years ago! People called Phoenicians started arriving in Lebanon in 10,000 BC. These people created some of the world's first cities. Since then, other people have been drawn to Lebanon's geography.

³     People from nearby Greece wanted to own Lebanon. So did the Roman Empire. Why? Lebanon has many good ports. Do you know what a port is? A port is a place on an ocean, sea, or river. There are lots of boats in a port. So a port allows people to travel by boat. Ports are very important, and the Greeks and Romans knew it.
