Lebanon - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     How important is music in your society? In most Western countries, music plays a very important role. In most places, music can be heard, either on the radio, on television, or in stores. The same can be said for Lebanon. Music is a critical part of its culture. In fact, Lebanon is known as the center of the Arab music world. Lebanese recording artists are some of the most popular and well-known musicians in the entire Arab world.

2     Lebanese culture has had many influences over the years. Muslims, Christians, Europeans, Arabs, and Turks have all ruled Lebanon. It is located between the Mediterranean Sea, Israel, and Syria. It has many natural resources. These resources have brought many different people to Lebanon. And with each group of people came a different kind of culture.

3     Today, Lebanon's culture is full of traditional music. This traditional music is tied closely to the country's history. But Lebanon's culture is very modern. Pop, rock, and even hip-hop artists can be heard on Lebanese radio. Lebanese artists can be seen on Lebanese music television. And one of Lebanon's greatest pop artists is a woman named Fairuz. Fairuz's story is one of a girl who loved singing, but was almost not allowed to.
