Billy the Kid
By Tammy Scarbrough

1     Billy the Kid was born Henry McCarty in New York City on November 23, 1859, but lived in Silver City, New Mexico for a part of his life. It was in that town that his trouble first began.

2     Billy was arrested for theft in Silver City, but escaped from the jail and started to roam around parts of Arizona and northern Mexico. While he was in Arizona, he rustled horses. In fact, it was at this time that he shot and killed his first person–F.P. Cahill. He shot him in a bar called the Camp Grand Saloon. Of course, he high-tailed it out of Arizona as fast as he could so he wouldn't get caught; and ended up in Lincoln County, New Mexico. It was here that he became known as Billy Bonney.

3     Billy began to work for a rancher named John Tunstall. Mr. Tunstall was involved in a battle over land and was murdered on February 18, 1878. Billy had become very good friends with Mr. Tunstall and looked up to him almost as a father. Well, as you can guess, Mr. Tunstall's murder caused Billy much pain and he set out to get revenge. He joined a gang called the "Regulators" and it was then that a killing spree began.
