1 Nicknames like Nanook, ice bear, ice king, and sea bear describe one of the largest members of the bear family. Polar bears live in the artic regions of the world such as Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland, and Norway.
2 When the colder weather causes the oceans to freeze, polar bears can be found miles from shore hunting for food. Polar bears are meat eaters. Their favorite food is seal, but they will also eat walrus. During spring and summer, when food is harder to find, they have been known to move inland and find bird eggs, rodents, berries, and vegetation to eat. They are also known to be scavengers, eating dead seals and other dead animals that wash up on shore. Their stomachs are huge. This lets them eat large meals at one time and store fat in their bodies until they can find another meal. Because of this adaptation, starvation is not a cause of death for polar bears.
3 Because most of the water where they live is frozen, polar bears don't drink water. They get the water their bodies need from breaking down the fat in their diet. While humans need to watch the fat they eat, polar bears need to eat a diet high in fat.
