1 Helen Adams Keller was born in June of 1880 with ears that could hear and eyes that could see. Her family lived in a house that was built by her grandparents.
2 When she was just 19 months old, Helen got very sick. She got sick with a terrible fever and everyone thought she would die. The fever finally went away and her parents thought she was well again, but something was wrong. Her mother noticed that Helen did not respond to the dinner bell, and she could not see her mother's hand when she passed it in front of Helen's face. At this point, her parents realized that the fever had struck Helen blind and deaf.
3 The doctors told Helen's parents about someone who was very good at helping deaf people. His name was Alexander Graham Bell. Mr. Bell helped the family find a good teacher for Helen. Her name was Anne Sullivan.
