Mesa Verde
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Many Indians lived in an area in Colorado called Mesa Verde over 1,000 years ago. Mesa Verde means, "green table." Today, you can visit Mesa Verde National Park to learn all about the way of life of the Indians who used to live there.

2     These Indians are called Anasazi, or "ancient ones." Local cowboys found their homes, or cliff dwellings, about 100 years ago and archaeologists have been studying the area since. We probably will never know everything about their lives since there wasn't anything left that was written down.

3     The Anasazi built their homes under the overhanging cliffs. Their basic material was sandstone. A mix of mortar held the blocks of sandstone together. The rooms were usually about six feet by eight feet and could hold two to three people.
