The History of Colorado
By Jennifer Kenny

1     The earliest settlers appeared in Colorado about 15,000 years ago. They were hunters and nomads. Around 5,000 B.C., they learned to farm. The Anasazi lived in the southwestern part of Colorado in their famous cliff dwellings.

2     It is believed that Coronado, a Spanish explorer, passed through southeast Colorado looking for the seven cities which were supposed to be paved in gold. After that, many other Spanish explorers came to the area.

3     In 1800, Spain gave a large area to the French. In 1803, it was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1806, Pike explored the area. A famous 14,110-foot peak he saw is named after him.
