The Old Man and the Cat

It was a fine summer day. The old man cut the grass. He used a riding mower. He liked to ride the mower and cut his grass.

He did not see the white cat. It hid under a bush. When the mower came close, the cat ran up a tree. It sat on a low branch.

The old man stopped cutting the grass. "What are you doing in my tree?" he asked the cat.

     "Meow," said the cat.

"Do you need my help to get down?" asked the old man. He tried to grab the cat by the tail.

"Meow!" said the cat. It held its tail up high.

The old man went into his shed. Soon he came back with a rope. "I will throw my rope to you," the old man said. He threw one end of the rope. The cat did not grab it.

"This will not do," said the old man. "I will come up and get you myself."

     "Meow!" said the cat.
