The Camping Trip

Katie stood on her tip toes as her father wrote their names in the park register. He paid the money for two adults and one child to camp there for 3 nights. Katie saw her mother waiting outside under a large shade tree with their camping gear. She began to dash out of the ranger's office to join her.

"Wait Katie!" called dad. "Do not run down the steps. They are too steep. Running will make you too hot and thirsty."

A few minutes later they were all together and ready to walk up the trail. They carried their tent, food, and sleeping bags in packs on their backs.

The trail was rocky but very dry. Katie looked up at the tall trees overhead. The wind seemed to whisper to them through the trees. Behind them, on either side, she could see mountains.

"What are these mountains called?" asked Katie as they passed the first campsite.
