Dog Day Picnic
By Mary L. Bushong

1     Jasmine strained her eyes as she looked out the window. She had been waiting for this weekend for the past six weeks. Now it was finally here. Her dog--well, actually the family dog, Max--was poking her with his nose through the side of his crate.

2     Finally, they pulled to a stop in the parking lot of the dog park. Max knew where he was and began to spin with excitement. Mom leaned over the seat to speak to Jasmine for a moment.

3     "Do you remember the rules for being around strange dogs?" she asked.

4     Jasmine nodded, and in a bored voice, began to recite them. "Never pet a strange dog without asking the owner's permission first. No running and no screaming."

5     "Good," said Mom. "See that you remember them."
