A Gem of a Fashion Show
By Beth Beutler

I felt like I was going to croak. I couldn't believe I had done this. What was I thinking! I knew better!

Maybe I should start at the beginning.

Saturday afternoon, Mom told me she was going to work in her home office upstairs. She asked my sister and me to play quietly in the bonus room so she could get some work done. My sister and I decided to have a pretend "fashion show" with a box of old dresses. We also collected several of our brand new clothes from our closets. This would be fun!

My first outfit was a lovely blue skirt with a ruffled white blouse. I stood tall and twirled around, and then I thought of the perfect addition.

"Wait just a minute," I told my sister. "I'll be right back."

"Where are you going?" she replied.

     "Just wait!" I responded.

I snuck into my mom's room and went to her jewelry box. Inside was a beautiful, and expensive, diamond brooch. Her father had given it to her when she got married. She did not wear it often but had shown it to my sister and me. I quickly pinned it onto my outfit and rushed back to the bonus room.

My sister noticed it right away. "Ashley! Are you supposed to have that?"
