Soccer, Smoke, and Steam

At soccer sign-ups, I noticed this kid in line ahead of me. He was a few inches taller than I am. It seemed as if everyone had grown at least a foot since last year, except me! Anyway, I had never seen this kid before. He had curly hair, freckles, and a gap between his front teeth.

"Hi, I'm Taylor Burns," I said. "Are you new here?"

He looked down at me. "You guess correctly. My family and I recently moved here," he said. "I applaud your deductive skills."

     "Huh?"

"Permit me to introduce myself. My name is Eric Fulton."

He caught me off guard when he stuck out his hand. This kid spoke and acted like somebody's father. I shook his hand, anyway.

Just to be polite, I asked how he liked it here.

"I must confess, at first I was forlorn at the loss of my old playground. However, I have ceased to dwell on my former home. I choose to forget the past, and live in the present instead."
