Racing Day!
By Beth Beutler

This was so exciting! Ray's best friend, Darryl, had invited him to a NASCAR® race. He'd been looking forward to this for a really long time. He couldn't wait to see his favorite driver, Biff Jordan, try to beat his record of 25 career wins. If Biff won today, he would make a significant stride in the championship points race.

Ray really appreciated Darryl's invitation to go to the race with he and his father. Darryl's father had gotten a Pit Pass, too! If they got there early enough, they would walk around and get a close look at the cars and maybe even some of the drivers. Therefore, Ray would be staying overnight at Darryl's house. He carefully packed his clothes and some of the things he would need to bring to the race -- a t-shirt, sweatshirt, water bottle, cap, gum, camera, and sunglasses.

Ray and Darryl went to bed early and tried to get some sleep. They finally did but then the alarm went off at 3:30 a.m.! They sleepily got up and settled in the back seat of Ray's father's truck. They dozed off for most of the three-hour trip and were suddenly awakened by Darryl's father saying, "We're here!"

After securing the truck, they immediately headed to the pits. They walked through numerous garages and watched crews fixing and tweaking engines for today's race. Ray and Darryl had gone to one driver's factory once, and it was cool to see them at work at the track itself.

As they looked through the chain link fence, Ray suddenly whapped Darryl on the shoulder. "Hey, is that who I think it is?"

Darryl spun around and looked carefully. "I think so! It looks like Biff Jordan!"

"Do you think we can get his autograph?" Ray asked with excitement.

     "Let's try!" Darryl replied.

Mr. Jordan noticed the boys waving at him. He said, "Hi, kids! How are you doing?"
