1.   tephra
Volcanic ash, dust, and any other material that is released by an erupting volcano.
Very small pieces of volcanic debris released into the atmosphere during an eruption. These small pieces of debris are no larger than .25 millimeters in diameter.
Vapors released from a volcano when it erupts.
The thickest layer of Earth. This layer is below the crust.
2.   dormant volcano
A volcano that is not currently erupting, but may erupt in the future.
The opening on the top of a volcano through which lava and gases are released.
This type of volcano is flat and can grow to be very large. Mauna Loa, on the island of Hawaii, is this type of volcano and takes up nearly half of the total area of the island.
Volcanic ash, dust, and any other material that is released by an erupting volcano.
3.   mantle
The thickest layer of Earth. This layer is below the crust.
This can form when two plates move towards each other. Some people enjoy climbing these!
A two-word definition for "magma", beginning with another word for "melted".
Melted rock below the earth's surface.
4.   molten rock
A large, bowl-shaped formation that occurs when the top of a volcano falls into the magma chamber.
One of the 30 sections that make up the surface of Earth. This is between 30 and 150 miles thick and it floats on the mantle. It can only move or float a few centimeters in a year.
A two-word definition for "magma", beginning with another word for "melted".
An underground pool that contains molten rock.
5.   mountain
The outer layer of Earth that we walk on.
A volcano that is not likely to erupt anytime in the future.
This can form when two plates move towards each other. Some people enjoy climbing these!
A steep, tall volcano that can sometimes rise as high as 10,000 feet. An eruption from this type of volcano is violent.
6.   volcanic dust
Very small pieces of volcanic debris released into the atmosphere during an eruption. These small pieces of debris are no larger than .25 millimeters in diameter.
A vent, or hole, in the surface of the Earth. When this erupts, it may release gases that come from the inside of the Earth.
A steep, bowl-shaped hill that forms around a volcanic vent. This type of volcano can rise up to a thousand feet.
Very large pieces of volcanic debris that are at least 5 millimeters in diameter, which are released into the atmosphere during an eruption.
7.   lava
Melted rock that reaches the earth's surface.
The highest point of a volcano or mountain.
Pieces of volcanic debris that are larger than .25 millimeters in diameter, but smaller than 5 millimeters in diameter.
Melted rock below the earth's surface.
8.   volcano
