By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Many young people work as cooks and food preparation workers. Most of them work part-time. There always seem to be job openings in food preparation. It is very fast-paced work. Some people cannot keep up with the work. Others move to full-time jobs or jobs with higher pay.

2     Chefs, cooks, and food preparation workers prepare all kinds of foods. They work in many kinds of restaurants. Chefs and cooks create recipes and prepare meals. Food preparation workers get everything ready to be cooked. They cut up fruits and vegetables. They trim meat. They may have other duties like keeping the kitchen clean.

3     Executive chefs and head cooks in big restaurants have many years of training. Some even start their training in high school. Many of them have gone to special schools to learn about working with food. Most of them have been food preparation workers and cooks before they became chefs or head cooks.
