Jake and Jackie Learn about Healthy Eating
By Beth Beutler

Jackie stomped out of the house and flopped onto the chair on the front porch. She made a sour face, crossed her arms, and sighed.

A few minutes later, Jake sailed by on his skateboard, holding an apple. He hopped off and bounded up the porch steps to say hello. "Why the pouty face?" Jake asked.

"I wish I could eat whatever I wanted," Jackie complained. "I just tried to have a snack, and Mom wouldn't let me."

"What were you going to have?" Jake asked as he bit into the crisp apple.

"I was trying to have a toaster pastry. I love those! But Mom said I've already had enough sugar for the day and to have some carrot sticks instead. I don't know what the big deal is. It was a strawberry toaster pastry!"

Jake laughed. "My parents are like that too. They keep telling me to have only one sweet per day. That's why I'm eating an apple now instead of another piece of the leftover birthday cake from my cousin's party on Saturday."

"What does it matter?" Jackie asked, not noticing that her mom was now standing on the other side of the screen door.

Jake smiled at Jackie's mom as she stepped out onto the porch. "Let me tell you a story," she said.

"Many years ago, there was a young girl who was allowed to eat anything she wanted. She had a sweet tooth, so every day she ate cookies or cake. She rarely ate vegetables, fruit, or whole grain bread. Over time, she gained so much weight that she was forty pounds past the healthy range for her age and height."
