1     Vincent van Gogh es uno de los artistas más grandes de todos los tiempos. Sus cuadros tienen un precio elevado de casi 100 millones de dólares. Y su museo en Ámsterdam es una visita obligada para los turistas. Aunque fue brillante, van Gogh no vivió en realidad ni un sólo día como una celebridad. Su fama llegó póstumamente.
 
2     Van Gogh nació en los Países Bajos (u Holanda) el 30 de marzo de 1853. Su nombre completo era Vincent Willem van Gogh. Van Gogh, el segundo de seis hijos, tenía dos hermanos y tres hermanas. De todos, su preferido era su hermano menor, Theodorus (Theo).
 
3     En su infancia, van Gogh era indiferente a los dibujos y los cuadros. Pero eso cambió luego de entrar en una empresa llamada Goupli & Cie en 1869 y hacerse marchante de arte en ella. Como marchante de arte, van Gogh tuvo abundantes oportunidades de visitar galerías y museos y trabajar con ellos. Eso amplió sus perspectivas y lo hizo apreciar las obras de arte. Sin embargo, pese a su nuevo interés en los dibujos y los cuadros, van Gogh perdió lentamente el interés en su trabajo. En la primavera de 1876, fue despedido por Goupli & Cie. La noticia no lo afectó, porque había decidido que seguiría los pasos de su padre. Quería hacerse clérigo.
