1     Mary Pope Osborne nació el 20 de mayo de 1949 en Oklahoma. Su padre era militar, por lo cual se mudaban constantemente durante su infancia. De hecho, para cuando tenía quince años había vivido en Oklahoma, Austria, Florida, Virginia y Carolina del Norte. Si bien mucha gente se habría quejado de tener que mudarse tanto, ella en realidad lo disfrutaba. Decía que amaba a su familia y jugaba con sus hermanos todo el tiempo. Mary tenía a sus dos padres, su hermano mellizo, un hermano menor y una hermana mayor.
 
2     Todos juntos, esta ocupada familia vivió muchas aventuras. En Austria, por ejemplo, a los cuatro años Mary vivía frente a un castillo antiguo que se levantaba sobre un acantilado. Su vida en ese lugar parecía parte de un cuento de hadas. Luego, cuando Mary tenía cinco años y estaban en Virginia, vivieron en un viejo fuerte. Se sentía parte de la historia viva. De adolescente, Mary se unió al teatro comunitario local, donde sentía que viajaba a lugares imaginarios.
 
3     Como estudiante universitaria, Mary comenzó a estudiar actuación en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill. Cuando estaba en primer año, sus intereses la llevaron a especializarse en religión. Se graduó de la universidad a comienzos de los años setenta.
