1     Michelle Kwan nació en Torrance, California, el 7 de julio de 1980. A los cinco años, le encantaba mirar a su hermano jugar al hockey. Su hermana mayor, Karen, también era patinadora. Inspirada por sus hermanos, Michelle comenzó a patinar. Una vez en el hielo, su talento se hizo evidente y a los 6 años de edad, participó en su primera competición de patinaje y ganó.
 
2     En 1991, sus padres se mudaron a Lake Arrowhead, California, para trabajar con Frank Carroll, quien sería su entrenador por muchos años. Cuando tenía 12 años, Michelle rindió un examen para obtener la calificación de patinadora categoría superior, en contra de los deseos de su entrenador. Con esa calificación, comenzó a participar en competiciones de categoría superior. Obtuvo su primer campeonato con el Título Mundial Junior en 1994. Más tarde ese mismo año, terminó segunda en el Campeonato Estadounidense, octava en el Campeonato Mundial y participó en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1994 como suplente.
 
3     Su carrera siguió floreciendo. Ganó los Campeonatos Mundial y Estadounidense de 1996. Luego conoció a Tara Lipinski en competición. La patinadora más joven le quitó el protagonismo a Michelle en 1997 y se quedó con ambos títulos. Sin desanimarse, Michelle trabajó más arduamente y regresó para recuperar esos títulos en 1998. En ese momento, su sueño era una medalla de oro en las Olimpíadas. Pero eso no iba a suceder. De nuevo, Tara la superó y ganó la medalla. Michelle tuvo que conformarse con la de plata.
