1 Everyone has heard of Groundhog Day, right? Well, maybe not everybody. We know that it is celebrated every February 2 in a small town in Pennsylvania called Punxsutawney. The groundhog that predicts the weather there is named Punxsutawney Phil. Every year on February 2, the groundhog comes out of his hole after sleeping all winter long to look for his shadow. The groundhog has become world-famous for predicting the weather. If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. Not only is Groundhog Day a tradition in Pennsylvania, it is also a legend. A legend is a story told over and over down through many generations. Thousands of people visit "Gobbler's Nob" in the small Pennsylvania town to help celebrate Groundhog Day.
