Walt Disney – The Great Animator
By Tammy Scarbrough

1     Perhaps the greatest animator of all time was Walter Elias Disney. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1901. He left high school at age 17 to serve in World War I. He was as an ambulance driver. After he returned home to Kansas City, he got a job as an illustrator. He was also given the job of making animated cartoon ads.

2     He opened his own shop but was not very successful. He then took his brother, Roy, with him to Hollywood in 1923. There he continued his cartoon production. He saw his first glimpse of success when he created Steamboat Willie, which starred Mortimer Mouse. Walt's wife did not like that name very much. She suggested that Mickey might be a better name for the mouse. Walt agreed.

3     Disney and his studio employees developed many more animated cartoons over the years. These included Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi, and Fantasia. He also developed many live-action films, such as Mary Poppins and Treasure Island. In 1955, Disney finally had a market on television for the Mickey Mouse Club.
