In terms of Language Arts, by the end of fourth grade, students should be able to use relative pronouns and relative adverbs, form and use the progressive verb tenses, use modal auxiliaries (e.g.,can, may, must) to convey various conditions, order adjectives within sentences according to conventional patterns, form and use prepositional phrases, produce complete sentences, recognizing and correcting inappropriate fragments and run-ons, and correctly use frequently confused words (e.g., to, too, two; there, their). Regarding math, by the end of fourth-grade children should be familiar with factors and multiples within the range 1-100. They should be able to generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers and use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic, including both multiplying a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number and multiplying two two-digit numbers They should be able to solve multistep word problems using the four operations, including division problems with remainders. They should further be able to write equations for problems where x is the unknown number, and use mental math to decide whether their answer is reasonable. Students should be able to generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule and identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. Finally, students should be able to compare two fractions with different numerators and denominators by creating common denominators, or by comparing new fractions to existing fractions like 1/2. edHelper's fourth grade Morning Work Skills Books go over these concepts with fourth-grade students in a unique and entertaining way that is a big hit with students and teachers alike.
