Sid Fleischman
By Colleen Messina

1     "Villains have been so good to me that I may name them in my will," says Sid Fleischman, the famous author of The Whipping Boy. Sid Fleischman has written more than 60 books for children. He is the master of the comic novel.

2     Sid Fleischman was born in Brooklyn, New York, but he grew up in San Diego. He wanted to become a magician in fifth grade. After high school, he traveled around in a vaudeville magic show. He later wrote about these experiences in his autobiography called, "The Abracadabra Kid: A Writer's Life." He feels that this involvement in magic shows prepared him to become a writer, and many of his stories have magical themes. After vaudeville, he joined the U. S. naval reserve and went to college.

3     Fleischman then became a reporter for the San Diego Daily Journal, but when the paper went out of business, he became a fiction writer. A major motion picture studio bought the rights to one of his books, and he wrote the screenplay. After that, writing became his full-time profession. He soon discovered that writing for children was his favorite pastime.
