Dolley Madison Saves President Washington
By Judith K. Westbrook

1     Dolley Madison was an important woman in our history. She knew important people such as George Washington, the first president of the United States. Her husband was James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. Because her husband was the president of the U.S.A., she was called the First Lady of the U.S.A. He had a hard time because the U.S.A. was at war. It was called the War of 1812, and it was a war with England. England wanted to take the U.S.A. back and make it part of England again.

2     President James Madison said, "NO!" One night, soldiers from England went to the White House. The White House is where the president lives. They broke things. They took things that did not belong to them. They even set it on fire. They wanted to mess up everything that belonged to the president. They did not get everything.
