Bike Safety
By Cathy Pearl

Eric was ready to go for his first bike ride alone. He was getting ready to leave when his mom came out of the house.

"Wait a minute," she said. "Where is your helmet?"

"I don't want to wear a helmet," Eric said. "It makes my hair look funny. It makes me look funny, too. All my friends will laugh."

"I don't care if your friends will laugh. You are not going for a bike ride without a helmet."

"Why do I need a helmet?"

"A helmet keeps your head safe. If you are in an accident, it protects your head."

"I won't get in an accident, Mom. I am a good rider."

"I know you are," she said with a smile. "I'm worried about all the people who drive the cars. I can't make sure they are paying attention, so I have to help keep you safe."
